Ôn tập định mệnh đề quan hệ
Trước khi làm bài tập ứng dụng, hãy cùng Ôn luyện tìm hiểu về lý thuyết của mệnh đề quan hệ:
Các loại mệnh đề quan hệ
Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (Defining Relative Clauses)
Mệnh đề này cung cấp thông tin quan trọng và cần thiết để xác định danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa. Nếu bỏ đi, câu sẽ không đủ nghĩa hoặc gây hiểu lầm.
Ví dụ:
- The book that I bought yesterday is very interesting. (Cuốn sách mà tôi đã mua hôm qua rất thú vị.)
- The man who is standing next to the door is my brother. (Người đàn ông đang đứng cạnh cửa là anh trai tôi.)
Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định (Non-defining Relative Clauses)
Mệnh đề này cung cấp thông tin bổ sung, không bắt buộc. Ngay cả khi bỏ đi, câu vẫn giữ nguyên nghĩa chính và người nghe/đọc vẫn hiểu đối tượng được nhắc đến.
Ví dụ:
- My brother, who lives in New York, is a doctor. (Anh trai tôi, người mà sống ở New York, là một bác sĩ.)
- Ha Noi, which is the capital of Vietnam, is a beautiful city. (Hà Nội, là thủ đô của Việt Nam, là một thành phố xinh đẹp.)

Rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ
Khi mệnh đề quan hệ ở dạng chủ động, ta sử dụng V-ing:
- Boys who attend this school… -> Boys attending this school.
Còn nếu mệnh đề quan hệ ở dạng bị động, nó sẽ được chuyển thành quá khứ phân từ (V-ed):
- Goods which are made in this factory… -> Goods made in this factory.
Trong trường hợp có các số thứ tự (first/last/second…), so sánh nhất, hoặc những động từ khiếm khuyết (can, could, must…), mệnh đề quan hệ rút gọn sẽ được chia theo hình thức to V. Tương tự, nếu ở dạng bị động thì chuyển thành to + V-ed. Ví dụ: This is the only method that works effectively -> This is the only method to work effectively.
